One of the most important — and most misunderstood — parts of hot tub ownership is knowing when and how to drain and refill your spa. While regular testing and chemical balance are essential, over time even well-maintained water reaches a point where it simply needs a fresh start.
When you soak in your hot tub, you naturally introduce lotions, oils, detergents, cosmetics, and normal body residue into the water. Even with proper sanitation, these elements slowly build up and create what’s known as “total dissolved solids.” When this happens, water becomes harder to balance, chemicals stop working as effectively, and problems like cloudiness, odor, foaming, and skin irritation become more common.
In most cases, hot tubs should be drained and refilled every three to four months, depending on usage and bather load. Homes with frequent use, large families, or entertaining guests may benefit from even more frequent water changes.
Signs It’s Time for a Fresh Refill
It may be time to drain and refill if you notice:
When these issues appear, adding more chemicals usually isn’t the solution. In fact, it often makes the problem worse. A clean refill resets the system and allows water care products to work properly again.
Draining and refilling your spa doesn’t have to be complicated. Following these simple steps will help reset your water, improve performance, and make ongoing maintenance easier.
Remove all filters from your spa. Add a spa flush cleaner to the water. Turn the jets on high and let the system circulate for at least 20 minutes. This helps remove buildup and biofilm inside the plumbing. You may see foaming or debris rise to the surface — this means the cleaner is working.
Shut off power at the circuit breaker before draining your spa. You can drain it in one of two ways: by attaching a hose to the drain spout, opening the valve, and allowing the water to drain over several hours, or by using a sump pump for a faster option by placing it in the deepest part of the spa, attaching a hose, and monitoring it carefully to prevent it from running dry. Always drain the water into a sewer cleanout or utility sink, and avoid storm drains or landscaped areas.
While the spa drains, clean your filters. Soak them in a bucket with filter cleaner for up to 24 hours. Rinse thoroughly before reinstalling. If filters are worn or heavily damaged, replace them.
Once empty, clean the shell with Gel Gloss or diluted vinegar. Wipe down all surfaces, headrests, and corners with a soft cloth. Rinse thoroughly and drain any remaining water. Make sure all jets are open.
Before refilling your spa, confirm that the power is still off and the drain valve is closed, then insert the hose into the filter compartment and begin filling to help prevent air locks. Be sure to use a hose filter to reduce minerals, especially if you have hard or well water, and monitor the water level closely to avoid overfilling.
While the spa is filling, take time to clean the inside and outside of the cover, apply protectant if needed, and wipe down the cabinet with the appropriate cleaner. This helps prevent bacteria, mold, and sun damage while keeping your spa looking its best.
Reinstall the clean filters, then turn the main breaker back on and allow the spa to circulate for about 20 minutes. Test and adjust the pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and sanitizer, adding chemicals one at a time and allowing proper circulation between adjustments. Once the water reaches at least 80°F, retest and fine-tune the balance as needed.
